Working through trauma is akin to walking in a spiral. Sometimes it feels like we are back to square one, but we are on a new plane of trauma that was previously inaccessible to explore. Marta Szulc’s new exhibition, Dry Eyes, is a continuation of her earlier explorations and work with repressed emotions. The title points to a feature of trauma, which is the inability to see what reality is because the events experienced are too painful to take in. This form of blindness is self-defence, sometimes the only way to save oneself. This is the second instalment of this exhibition, which was presented at the end of 2023 at the EL Gallery Art Centre in Elbląg.

Marta Szulc – (born in 1980) Graduate of the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the European Academy of Arts in Warsaw. She is a visual artist developing her artistic practice in the areas of painting and drawing. In most of the works, she explores her own fears and tries to work through them by giving them the delicate form of watercolours, this aestheticisation of fear has become a way of taming it. She is currently focusing on the topic of generational trauma. Through her own experiences in therapy and her artistic practice, she wants to point out the universality of these experiences, try to tame them and give space to work with them. Her works have been presented in solo and group exhibitions at, among others, Foksal Gallery in Warsaw, CSW Kronika in Bytom, Biała Gallery in Lublin, BWA in Wrocław, CSW Łaźnia in Gdańsk.
