A lecture of the Bydgoszcz Academy of Art
Feel free to join me at the table. And what a table it is!
The topic of the lecture, “Icons of Polish Design. Rajmund Teofil Hałas – the ‘coffee and cigarettes’ table” is the starting point for the presentation of several topics concerning design in 1960s Poland. Small flats, difficulties with supplies, but as architect Jerzy Hryniewiecki advocated on behalf of the young citizens in 1956: “We want to be modern!” The interiors featured lightweight wall units, armchairs with narrow armrests and tables with gently profiled tops. The author of some of the projects was Romuald Hałas (1925-2008). What was his career path like? What did the designers’ visions look like, and what was the reality? Is the contemporary fascination with Polish design of the 1950s and 1960s a sign that ‘We want to be modern’ again?
