Collecting of contemporary art is a fascinating adventure, rich in interesting, often surprising events. The “Interesting things…” lecture presents basic information about a variety of the most important public and private collections of Polish contemporary art in Poland, about their rules. The main objectives of collections is to promote native art and to gather exceptional, outstanding works of art. The characters of private collections are determined by the need to surround oneself with exceptional things belonging to their owners, by personal views on art, by carefully looking at the works of Polish artists, who describe the surrounding world in fascinating ways. Among the state and regional institutions there are many interesting collections of paintings, sculptures, drawings, graphics, posters, textiles, objects and installations found in the National Museums of Warsaw, Krakow, Wrocław, Gdańsk, Poznań, the Museum of Art in Łódź, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the Silesian Museum in Katowice, the Leon Wyczółkowski Regional Museum in Bydgoszcz, the Regional Museum in Toruń, the Jacek Malczewski Museum in Radom, the Museum of Modern Art in Krakow, the Modern Museum in Wrocław, the Upper Silesian Museum in Bytom, the Museum of Chełm Region in Chełm, the Lubusz Museum in Gorzów Wielkopolski, the National Art Gallery Zachęta in Warsaw, Centre of Modern Art Zamek Ujazdowski in Warsaw, the Centre of Modern Art Signs of the Times in Toruń, the Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko, Foksal Gallery in Warsaw, Atlas Sztuki Gallery in Łódź, Biała Gallery in Lublin, ING Foundation of Polish Art in Warsaw. When it comes to private collectors, one should pay attention to the collections of Grażyna Kulczyk, Wojciech Fibak, Krzysztof Musiał, Dariusz Bieńkowski, Piotr Voelkel, Anna and Jerzy Starak, Teresa and Andrzej Starmach, Hanna and Jarosław Przyborowski.
Jerzy Brukwicki
Jerzy Brukwicki (1945) – art critic, curator of exhibitions, journalist. Long-standing head of the “Pokaz” Critics’ Gallery in Warsaw. In the 1980s, the author of dozens of independent exhibitions, such as Polish Pieta, A Time of Sadness, A Time of Hope, Presence, Against Evil, Against Violence. Organised individual exhibitions for Tadeusz Brzozowski, Wojciech Kołyszko, Paweł Kowalewski, Jerzy Medyński, Antoni Rodowicz, Ryszard Stryjecki, Andrzej Wajda and others, graphics art of “Solidarity”. Editor and publisher of the independent culture magazine “Wybór”, the editor of the underground magazine “Przegląd Wiadomości Agencyjnych” (PWA), collaborated with publishing houses NOWA, Przedświt, Pokolenie.
