As a part of Bydgoszcz Academy of Art we invite you to a workshop led by Joanna Michalska, known as “Nitkomaniaczka.” You will learn the technique of Wilanów embroidery from Urzecze on the Vistula, which is distinguished by its elegance, simplicity, black thread colour and chain stitch. You will discover how traditional embroidery has adorned women’s clothing, and be inspired by its applications in modern design, examples of which you can see HERE.

The workshop is aimed at both those with embroidery experience and those just starting out.

Agenda:
– Lecture: characteristics of Wilanów embroidery from the Urzecze region
– Practice: learning chain stitch, designing embroidery-inspired patterns, embroidering the designed pattern on fabric.
How to prepare?
In this workshop we will focus on floral motifs created with black thread. Each participant will create a pattern that they can make on cotton fabric, ideal for further creative projects (e.g. a make-up bag, pouch, appliqué). You can also bring your own clothing to decorate with embroidery – we particularly recommend white cotton or linen shirts for beginners.
Materials and tools provided! You will have threads, needles, tambours, scissors, carbon paper and LED boards for transferring patterns.
Joanna Michalska “Nitkomaniaczka” – trained as a visual artist – fashion designer. An active cultural animator, she has been organising workshops and community projects based on diverse techniques using hand sewing for many years, conducting them with different groups of participants (from children to seniors). Scholarship holder of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, three-time recipient of a scholarship from the City of Bydgoszcz. Winner of embroidery competitions in Poland. Winner of the Mazowiecka Nagroda Inspiracji Kulturalnych (Mazovian Cultural Inspiration Award) for a project based on local heritage. Privately, a person with broad interests in folk culture.
