Paweł Szamburski (clarinet), Tomasz Pokrzywiński (cello) and Michał Górczyński (contrabass clarinet) play mystic Jewish songs without words – the Hasidic Nigunim. The development of the Nigunim, which often drew on local traditions and musical patterns in the Chassidic culture, dates back to the 18th century. These are exceptional prayers, with the help of which, in collective singing and dancing, in euphoric ecstasy, the Hasidim reach the “God’s chamber”. Drawing mainly on the legacy of the Modrzyc dynasty, as well as on the musicological collections of Moshe Bieregowski, Bastarda reveals the beauty of the Jewish melodies, exploring and filtering them through the unique, already shaped language of the group. The syllabic songs of the Hasidim allow the artists to improvise freely and to express themselves in a very personal and intimate way. The Nigunim’s intra-musical, narrative power is also inspiring for Bastarda. Without words, they talk about joy and sadness, about life in the full spectrum of sensations, as if they were the essence of Hasidism, which has always oscillated between waiting for the end of the world and the joyful, almost ecstatic affirmation of life. Mystical compositions create a space in which artists move with great freedom, great class, knowledge and sensitivity, creating an innovative, outstanding work of extraordinary power and beauty.
