ART AT HIGH NOON! WORKSHOPS FOR SENIORS
Subject: In the Footsteps of Bydgoszcz Artists
Moderated by Dr Barbara Chojnacka
In December 2023, the book “Życie artystyczne w Bydgoszczy w latach 1920–1939” (Artistic Life in Bydgoszcz in the Years 1920–1939), by Barbara Chojnacka, was published, constituting the first monograph dedicated to the visual arts in the interwar city. It presents the birth and dynamic development of the local arts community in the context of successively emerging arts care institutions such as: The State School of Art Industry, the State Industrial School, the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts, the City Museum, the Society of Friends of Fine Arts and the Arts and Cultural Council. In the creation of these institutions and societies, a significant role was played by the visual artists themselves, who associated themselves in art unions and groups. In learning about the activities of the institutions mentioned above, we follow in the footsteps of artists – painters, sculptors, draughtsmen, graphic artists, stage designers and designers, both well-known and forgotten, who have contributed to local artistic life.
Painters include Antoni S. Procajłowicz, Leon Dolżycki, Jerzy Rupniewski, Feliks Krassowski and Franciszek Gajewski, while sculptors include Jan Wysocki, Piotr Triebler and Teodor Gajewski. The profiles of these artists will be introduced at the lecture.
The meeting will also be an opportunity to announce a January event – the presentation of a unique painting by Jerzy Rupniewski, entitled “Duch przeszłości – zwycięzca” (Spirit of the Past – the Winner), which is the painter’s allegorical vision of the entry of Polish troops into Bydgoszcz on January 20th, 1920.
Barbara Chojnacka – Ph.D., art historian, museologist, manager of the Graphic Arts and Drawing Gallery at the Leon Wyczółkowski Regional Museum in Bydgoszcz.
