The Society of Cultural Initiatives in Bydgoszcz
Municipal Gallery bwa -Kantorek Gallery in Bydgoszcz
present a post-competition exhibition HOME (in small format)
opening on December 5th, (Friday) 2014, 6pm
exhibition open until January 10th, 2015
For the sixth time, the Society of Cultural Initiatives in Bydgoszcz organised a competition for Bydgoszcz artists; since 2011, in cooperation with the Municipal Gallery bwa in Bydgoszcz:
2009 -The Yard at 62 Dworcowa St. (exhibition at the Orion Club)
2010 -The Yard (exhibition at the Orion Club)
2011 -Bridges (exhibition at the Kantorek Gallery)
2012 -Inspired by Wyczółkowski (exhibition at the Kantorek Gallery)
2013 -Streets (exhibition at the Kantorek Gallery)
For this year’s „Home” competition, 33 authors submitted 73 works: 48 works in plastic arts (painting, drawing, collage, sculpture) and 25 photographs. The works in these two groups were judged by a panel comprised of: Elżbieta Kantorek (curator of exhibitions) -chairwoman; Prof. Aleksandra Simińska (painter) -member; Prof. Grzegorz Bednarski (painter) -member; Jerzy Riegel (photographer) -member, photography expert. On November 6th, 2014, the panel selected the works for the exhibition and awarded three prizes and one honourable mention to the authors of the works in the field of plastic arts, and three awards in the field of photography.
The first prize, unanimously, was awarded to Krzysztof Kunca, for a drawing expressive in the way of shaping, but full of the quiet of a day’s moment devoted for rest. Danuta Jamiołkowska was honoured for a house that might be a reality, but might be a dream, and Zbigniew Jastrowski for a small landscape full of colours, light and sunlight. A honourable mention went to a structurally interesting collage -a „reigning” Alice in Wonderland by Marta Filipiak.
Out of the interesting set of photographs by Andrzej Maziec, the panel chose -again, unanimously -a story about a common Bydgoszcz tenement house. Witold Jurkiewicz was awarded for a Belarusian house full of nostalgia and frozen in time; and Łukasz Owczarzak for a photograph with a pinch of humour and eroticism, that is a portrait of an untypical lady of the house. 80 artists were invited to participate in the competition, but only one third of them actually took part in it. I think that „Home”, having numerous meanings, was a subject difficult to illustrate in such a way so that its interpretation doesn’t become trivial.
