This year’s exhibition of diploma theses created in the Department of Interior Design of the Faculty of Design Arts at the Bydgoszcz University of Technology is another compilation of projects that are the culmination of archival research, conceptual solutions and diverse forms, giving them the best possible expression and clear message.
In addition to detailed boards depicting the issues of the interior works, their assumptions and the creative processes they were subjected to, the exhibition also features several mock-ups, as well as experiencing the intimacy of some of the created spaces with the help of video or virtual reality.
The thesis topics in several cases refer to the identity, culture and traditions in which their authors and authors grew up, consciously and originally adapting the values flowing from them. Examples include the design of a house reminiscent of a kyiz uji, i.e. a Kazakh yurt, as well as a concept involving the transformation of a domestic space in response to the changing needs of its occupants. In both, the sacral dimension of the house becomes an important element, with which the symbolism of the yurt protecting against evil coming from outside remains connected, a point also made in the second work, albeit in a slightly different yet more decisive and clear manner, in which the significance of the sacred is included in the theme and the thesis put forward by the student.
Other themes influencing the selection of the leitmotif among the diploma projects were, on the one hand, experiencing and exploring nature, which is also a visible inspiration in the interior design proposals and materials used, and on the other, urban landscapes, such as those of Bydgoszcz. These can be traced back to the Conceptual Design for the interior of a caravan; Adaptation of the interior of the former railway station in Tleń into a café; Wiener cafe. To the concept for restoring the identity of the interior of a café on Gdańska Street in Bydgoszcz or the adaptation of a space for a Porsche 911 showroom in Farbiarnia Lofts in Bydgoszcz.
With reference to naturo-culture, there was, among other things, a work dedicated to the residential houseboat, in which the author went towards both spheres, combining them and making use of one of the greatest assets of the city on the Brda River. Other projects responding to the needs of the immediate environment, as well as taking into account the special cognitive needs of people with dysfunctions, include the modernisation of the dormitory of the Bydgoszcz University of Technology and the concept of a sensory carpet.
The cross-section of works presented in the exhibition reveals the openness and sensitivity of the young female architects and interior designers, together with an understanding of the history of the place, the existing landscape or the environment to which they refer. At the same time, it provides an insight into the prevailing trends, needs and challenges facing interior architecture today.
The exhibition will run from September 12th to October 6th. It will conclude with a closing ceremony on October 4th (Friday), at 6pm.
