Ichigo Ichie – one meeting, one chance, one opportunity. This is Jędrzej Hofman’s first solo exhibition, where he will present a set of hand-dyed cotton kimonos with decorative digital embroidery. The works “Miru” 見る, “Torii” 鳥居, “Tori” 鳥, “Koi” 鯉, “Tsuki” 月, “Botan” 牡丹, “Ie” 家 – will be presented at the gallery will be presented in the gallery as a kind of scenography, a story we will be drawn into. The Polish spelling of the titles is unnecessary here – anyone who sees the colourful patterns on the outfits will be able to decipher the Japanese word. Kimonos are not just seen as traditional Japanese dress. Because of their uniqueness, for some, they may be a work of art, a tradition, a symbol of culture or the beauty of Japanese nature. The culture of the Far East is an endless inspiration for the further creation of artistic Japanese costumes and this is not just one meeting, one chance, one opportunity to see Jędrzej Hofman’s works – those in the gallery or those yet to be created.
Jędrzej Hofman was born in 1991 in Szczecin. In 2013, he defended his bachelor’s degree in graphic design at the Academy of Art in Szczecin, in Grzegorz Marszałek’s studio. From 2013-2019 he studied at the University of Arts in Poznań, gaining education in painting, art history and clothing and textile design. He studied, among others, under Piotr C. Kowalski, Marcin Berdyszak and Dominik Lejman in whose studio the works for both his bachelor’s (2016) and first master’s (2018) diploma were created. Distinguished in the Alicja Kępińska competition for a theoretical paper written under the watchful eye of Marta Smolińska (2018). His second master’s thesis was carried out in the Studio of Unique Fashion Design of Sławomira Chorążyczewska, focusing on kimono form and digital embroidery design.
