Joanna Pałys is the winner of the special prize

The object of my observation and contemplation is – first
of all – the industrial constructions of the last century
– once the symbols of human triumph, now deteriorating,
turned into a symbol of inevitable passing. However,
there’s an elusive beauty in those places, which I strive to
capture in my paintings. The first industrial landscapes
were created quite naturally, as a recording of the surroundings
where I grew up – the raw lumps of industrial
architecture, often the landmarks of the area.
Although „Objects” are real places, they lose their concreteness
on canvases, become anonymous, similar to
many others, thus – universal.
I consciously chose the traditional painting language.
Softness and the apparent impermanence of the canvas
contrast with the strength and stability of the concrete
structures. It may be so that the canvas will last longer
that the architectural monument that inspired it.

Born in 1981 in ?widnica.
In 2003-2008, she studied at the Faculty of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw.
For her graduation work in painting, realised under Prof. Stanisław Kortyka, and in Design of Painting in Architecture
and Urban Planning, realised under Prof. Wojciech Kaniowski, she received the „Best Diploma 2008” award of the
Wroclaw Academy of Fine Arts. She got the annex in graphics under Prof. Przemysław Tyszkiewicz, in the Studio of
Workshop Graphics of the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw.
