The exhibition on show is an installation of selected sound works by Paweł Romańczuk. It consists of mechanical playing objects that explore the realm of impersonal performativity, moving seamlessly into the format of playing sculptures. The constant elements present in these works are unusual sound sources: unique musical instruments or amplified objects without instrumental characteristics, appearing in the works of Paweł Romańczuk and Małe Instrumenty since 2007. The way the sound structure is controlled and realised allows the music to be performed in both mechanical and manual modes; such a performance will be the content of the exhibition’s opening. The artist presented installations of mechanical objects at the festivals Warszawska Jesień and Audio Art festivals, Festival of First Performances, Ad Libitum, Sanatorium Dźwięku and Eufonie, Sacrum Profanum, Sonikalia, Auksodrone, Wien Modern, Avantgarde Schiphorst Festival, Nowe Horyzonty and in the author’s Toy Piano Gallery.
Paweł Romańczuk – musician, composer, has been searching for unusual sound sources since 2006. Founder of the Wrocław-based group Małe Instrumenty, in which he pursues his own artistic needs. He has written music for more than 30 films and theatre performances and has published his own music on 15 LPs, SPs, CDs and DVDs in Poland, Japan and France.
He has amassed a unique collection of more than 800 unusual musical instruments used in concert recording and publishing activities. He builds his own instruments, playing constructions and creates sound installations.
