Birth in Art
On May 17th, 2013, at 1pm, a unique exhibition titled „Birth in Art” will open at the Municipal Gallery bwa.
In addition to the miracle of birth, the photographs by a well-known Bydgoszcz photographer Wojciech Wozniak will also show the unique, full of passion and commitment work of doctors, midwives and nurses in this very special moment for every woman. The exhibition will be open until June 7th, 2013
The curator of the exhibition is its originator – Maciej W. Socha, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Oncological Gynaecology, at the Collegium Medicum of the Nicolaus Copernicus University. The exhibition is organised by the Department of Promotion and Information of the Collegium Medicum.

Medicine is beautiful and full of hope. It is also difficult and painful. One should, however, agree with the argument of Hippocrates, that this is the noblest of all sciences. It touches on the essence of human life, and to show its beauty is a real art.
Pregnancy and childbirth have always been examples of a mystical event and at the same time are the most original manifestations of human nature. Childbirth is an act that borders on the sacred and the profane, arouses extreme emotions and memories. It is a difficult but fascinating subject, inclining to reflect on the meaning of our existence.
In the Bydgoszcz Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Oncological Gynaecology at the Collegium Medicum of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, the analysis of the place of pregnant women in art was started in the past, and it resulted in interesting works and lectures. This time, the goal was to present the miracle of birth, and the whole project was titled „Birth in art”.
The overall objective of the project is to show the act of birth through exhibition of artistic photography. Childbirth is a unique and memorable part of life, and the accompanying feelings can become the content of a specific reportage of emotions and events in which the couple giving birth participates. These pictures are obviously not atlas-like illustrations of the course of delivery, but an artistic document of this extraordinary moment.
The aesthetic level of the works has been taken care of by a titled photographer Wojciech Woźniak, whose artistic achievements legitimise the quality of work undertaken. The resulting photographs will be presented in an exhibition at the Municipal Gallery bwa in Bydgoszcz and then in the Jan Biziel University Hospital No. 2 in Bydgoszcz.
Everyone involved in this unique project are hoping that the resulting work will show that medicine is an art, and remind that doctors are rather humanists than craftsmen.
